Destination safety score calculator
Re-rank 50 destinations by weighting the sub-variables that matter most for your trip: theft, harassment, night safety, and scam risk. Default weights are equal; slide what you care about up to surface destinations that score better on that dimension. Per spec D7.3, this calculator is the engine behind SafeTravelGal's ranking pages.
About the underlying data: Sub-scores are analyst-assigned at dataset v1.0 freeze (2026-05-13), cross-referenced against published crime and gender-safety indices at that time. Advisory levels and FCDO summaries on the linked country pages are refreshed every 6 hours from US State Dept, UK FCDO, AU DFAT, CDC, GPI, Equaldex. v1.1 will replace the analyst-assigned composite with a live recomputation when input feeds update — see the methodology.
Re-weight the sub-scores
The default ranking equally weights theft, harassment, night safety, and scam risk. Slide a weight up to bias the ranking toward what you care about most.

How scores are produced
Each country's sub-scores were assigned at dataset v1.0freeze by the analyst, cross-referencing official sources. The calculator above re-weights those sub-scores — it does not introduce new data. For the full breakdown including what's ingested live vs consulted at freeze, see the methodology page.
FAQ
How does the safety score calculator work?
The calculator re-ranks the 50 destinations in our v1.0 dataset based on weights you choose for four sub-variables: theft, harassment, night safety, and scam risk. Default weights are equal (1× each). Move a slider up to bias the ranking toward what matters most for your trip — bumping harassment to 3× will surface destinations with lower harassment sub-scores ahead of those with worse theft scores, for example.
Where do the sub-scores come from?
The theft and harassment sub-scores are 1-10 integers analyst-assigned at v1.0 dataset freeze (2026-05-13) cross-referencing government travel advisories (US State Dept, UK FCDO, AU DFAT) and published safety indices. Night-safety and scam-risk are categorical (low/medium/high) for the same date. The composite overall safety score is computed from 4 sources at equal 25% weights: US State Dept advisory level, UK FCDO advisory severity, AU DFAT advisory level, and Global Peace Index rank — see the methodology page for the full formula.
Is this a 'live' safety score?
The advisory level shown on each country page is live (refreshed every 6 hours from US State Dept, UK FCDO, AU DFAT). The composite safety score this calculator produces is a re-weighting of the v1.0 data-verified sub-scores — it is not a live recomputation from feed data. v1.1 introduces the live recomputation. The methodology page explains the distinction.
How is this different from the Solo Female Travelers Club Safety Index?
SFTC publishes a 1-4 ordinal score averaged across 7 inputs that hasn't refreshed since 2022 (per a direct fetch of their index page). This calculator works on a 0-10 composite with four user-tunable sub-variables, runs on data data-verified in May 2026, and links every per-country score back to a country guide showing per-source last-fetched timestamps. Both tools serve readers; this one is built around transparency about what's live and what's data-verified.
What this tool does NOT do
It does not give safety advice tailored to your medical, financial, or trip-specific situation. It does not replace your government's current travel advisory — those are linked from each country page and should always be your last check before booking. It does not consider real-time event risk (active conflict, natural disaster, disease outbreak beyond CDC notices) that hasn't yet propagated into the v1.0 dataset. And it does not certify any destination as 'safe' — composite scores are planning inputs, not guarantees.
