What the composite score measures

The overallScore (0–10) is a weighted composite produced by the SafeTravelGal data pipeline. The pipeline ingests advisory level data from three government sources — the US State Department (travel.state.gov), UK FCDO (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice), and AU DFAT (smartraveller.gov.au) — and cross-references against the Global Peace Index published annually by the Institute for Economics & Peace. Each government issues advisory levels on a 1–4 scale (1 = Exercise Normal Precautions, 4 = Do Not Travel). The GPI provides a supplemental conflict-and-crime signal on a continuous scale where lower scores indicate greater peacefulness.

Advisory level carries the largest weight in the composite formula. A country at Level 1 across all three government feeds starts with the highest possible advisory sub-score. GPI score then adjusts the composite upward or downward: destinations with low GPI scores (highly peaceful) score above their advisory-only baseline, while destinations with elevated GPI scores score below it. The result is a single 0–10 number that surfaces both governmental risk assessment and independent peace-index ranking in one output.

The formula does not incorporate gender-specific signals — the government advisory feeds are not gender-differentiated. Each country's individual guide at /safety/ supplements the composite with harassment risk, night-safety level, and LGBTQ+ legal status sourced from Equaldex and travel-safety research, where available. Those fields are shown as risk levels (low/medium/high) on each country guide, not incorporated into the composite score.

Frequently asked questions

How is the safest countries ranking calculated?

The composite overallScore (0–10) is computed by the SafeTravelGal data pipeline from three government advisory feeds — US State Department, UK FCDO, and AU DFAT (Smartraveller) — and the Global Peace Index (GPI) published by the Institute for Economics & Peace. Advisory level (1–4) carries the largest weight; GPI score provides a secondary conflict-and-crime signal. The full formula, weights, and normalisation methodology are published at /methodology.

Is the ranking updated in real time?

Dataset v1.0 is a frozen snapshot with advisory levels last checked on 2026-05-13. The automated pipeline polls US State Dept, UK FCDO, and AU DFAT every 6 hours; dataset v1.1 — which will reflect live advisory changes — is in development. For the most current advisory status of any country, always check your government's official travel advisory page before travel.

What does 'Exercise Normal Precautions' (Level 1) mean?

Level 1 is the lowest (safest) advisory level issued by the US State Department. It indicates no unusual safety or security conditions have been identified. The US State Department issues this rating when a destination meets baseline safety standards comparable to travel within the United States. Countries in the top positions on this list carry a Level 1 advisory from all three governments whose feeds the pipeline ingests.

Are these rankings specifically for solo female travelers?

The underlying data sources — US State Dept, UK FCDO, AU DFAT, and GPI — measure country-level safety across all travelers. The composite score is not gender-specific. SafeTravelGal supplements the score with gender-relevant signals (harassment risk, night safety, LGBTQ+ legal status) in each country's full guide at /safety/[country]/. The ranking is a computed starting point; each guide provides the female-traveler-specific context.

Where can I get more detail on a specific country?

Each country in the top 20 with a published guide links directly to /safety/[country]/ — click the country name in the rankings table. Those guides include advisory snapshots from all three governments, LGBTQ+ legal status, harassment and night-safety risk levels, emergency numbers, city-specific notes, and a pre-departure checklist sourced from government and emergency-services data.
