Data Policy

SafeTravelGal publishes safety information that readers act on. This page documents how we source facts, how data is verified before publication, and how we handle corrections.
1. Sourcing
Official government advisories first. Every country page leads with the current US State Department travel advisory level and a plain-language summary of UK FCDO and Australian DFAT advice. These are pulled directly from the government feeds listed below — never paraphrased without source attribution.
Inline citations. Every government-data fact carries an inline link to its primary source. If we say “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution,” we link to the State Department's page for that country. If we summarize FCDO advice, we link to gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.
Live vs reference. The methodology page draws a clear line between sources we currently ingest live and sources consulted at the v1.0 dataset freeze. We do not claim a source is live on a country page unless it actually drives a live-updated field.
No anonymous claims. Quotes and first-person travel anecdotes are attributed to the named data verification lead or a named contributor. We don't publish “a reader told us” or “we've heard” — every claim has a real attached identity.
Currently ingested feeds
- US State Dept: US Department of State
- UK FCDO: UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
- AU DFAT: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Smartraveller)
- CDC: US Centers for Disease Control — Travel Health Notices
- GPI: Institute for Economics & Peace — Global Peace Index
- Equaldex: Equaldex LGBTQ+ Rights Index
2. Data verification
Every country guide, city guide, ranking page, gear comparison, and insurance comparison is verified by the named Data Verification Lead before publication. The verifier's name and the last-reviewed date appear on every spoke page and in the article's structured data (Article.reviewedBy).
The Data Verification Lead is a real, named person with verifiable research and data-analysis credentials — see /about for current status. SafeTravelGal does not publish verifier-gated content without a named human in this role.
The verifier does not need to have personally visited every destination covered — country and city guides are built from official sources and verified for accuracy. First-person travel anecdotes only appear on guides where the verifier or a named contributor has actually been; those segments are clearly attributed.
3. Affiliate independence
Affiliate revenue funds the free tools and research work on this site. It does not influence which products we recommend or how countries are scored. If we don't think a product fits the use case — even when commission is on offer — we say so or omit it.
Every page that contains an affiliate link shows the disclosure both above the first link and in the footer. The full partner list is at /affiliate-disclosure.
4. Corrections
If you spot a factual error — an out-of-date advisory level, a wrong emergency number, a misattributed source, a product claim that doesn't check out — email info@safetravelgal.com. We respond.
When a correction lands on a page, the article's last-reviewed date updates. Material corrections (those that change a safety score, advisory level, or substantive recommendation) are noted at the bottom of the relevant page with the date.
Formal correction-handling procedures are being finalized. In the meantime, email corrections to the address above and we will respond within 48 hours.
5. What we do not publish
- Absolute safety claims. Travel carries inherent risk; no product or destination eliminates that risk. We use compliant phrasing — “acts as a deterrent,” “enhances situational awareness,” “mitigates risk” — and avoid language that asserts a product or place is fully free of danger.
- Fabricated personas. Authors, analysts, and reviewers are real people whose credentials can be verified.
- Fabricated reviews or quotes. Pull-quotes carry attribution and permission; aggregate ratings only appear when there is real review data behind them.
- AI-generated copy presented as verified data. Drafts may use AI assistance for research synthesis or proofreading, but every published claim is verified by the named data verification lead; the verifier is accountable.
